I think I agree with the PCS strike…
I’ve just been talking to a woman who works for the Job Centre, and as she explained it the purpose of the strike is that in advance of redundancies their employers are trying to change their contracts in order to make the redundancies cheaper.
Now, while I applaud any shrinking of the bloated public sector, changing the terms and conditions of employment is not on. Both parties, the state and the state’s employees freely entered into the contracts they signed, so if one party wants out they should stick to what they agreed to. If it costs a bit more, then tough. A contract’s a contract, right?
